A Career in Vision Care is Waiting for You
What does a Licensed Optician do?
Licensed Opticians are eye health experts, specializing in optical needs. We stay up to date with modern lens technology and help our clients choose the best corrective optical device for them. We also interpret prescriptions from optometrists, assist in frame selection, manage store stock, and help to make sure glasses are fit properly. Some Licensed Opticians also help teach clients how to wear and care for contact lenses.
What education do I need to become a Licensed Optician?
A certification in Opticianry from an accredited post-secondary education is required for Canadians wishing to become a Licensed Optician. Depending on where the certification is from, this can take between one and three years and can even be completed online. Candidates will then need to pass an exam and then apply for a license. “I got started working at Vogue by a complete fluke. I brought a friend of mine to an eye exam and started trying on some frames to pass the time while I waited. I loved the atmosphere of the store and the people working seemed to enjoy what they were doing so much that I brought in a résumé to see for myself what optical was really about.
Not long after joining the Vogue Optical team, I fell in love with lenses and everything the optical world had to offer. From helping a patient with the doctor to ensuring they were given all the options for lenses, I’ve come to love everything I do within my scope of practice. I’ve been at Vogue for just about six years and every day I have the opportunity to learn something new.
Making sure a frame fits a person’s style and visual needs is always a great way to make for a perfect day.”

My favorite frame today—because it changes on a daily basis—is the Longchamp 2141 and my favorite part of my job is the people I meet and making them look and see beautifully. I like road trips, yard sales, and my Saturday nights.”
